Introduction to Fly Fishing

Designed to provide anglers with a solid foundation of fly fishing knowledge, the Introduction to Fly Fishing course is packed with information. In this class, anglers will learn how to choose appropriate fly fishing equipment, how to identify and imitate particular insects, how to find fish in rivers and lakes, learn basic casting skills and how to tie popular fly fishing knots. The class also provides an overview of fly fishing opportunities in Washington and good places to use your new skills.

Limited to twelve anglers. Two instructors will be present for the casting portion of the class for classes larger than six anglers.

Equipment will be provided upon request.

Beginning Fly Tying

Beginning Fly Tying

Enter a new dimension of the sport of fly fishing by learning to tie your own flies. Learn about the materials and tools used to tie flies and the basic fundamentals for tying streamer, nymph and dry flies. Patterns learned will include the Wooly Bugger, Soft Hackle, Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator and the Gray Wulff.

Limited to five participants per instructor.

Basic tools will be required (vise, bobbin, scissors, whip finishing tool and hackle pliers).

All materials will be provided.

Steelhead Fly Fishing

Steelhead Fly Fishing

Learn the skills to effectively fly fish for the Northwest's most celebrated gamefish. The steelhead is perhaps the most challenging and revered fly rod quarry in all of North America and the knowledge of how to catch them with a fly does not come easily. In this course anglers will learn the most successful techniques for fly fishing for steelhead, the very important skills of how to identify good steelhead holding water, presentation techniques, using Spey rods, fly patterns and timing steelhead runs on our local rivers. Includes a half-day of on-the-water instruction on one of our local steelhead rivers.

Limited to four anglers per instructor. Participants will need a fishing license, waders and boots for the on-the-water portion of the class.

Fly Fishing Puget Sound Beaches

Fly Fishing Puget Sound Beaches

Explore the abundance of fly fishing opportunities on the beautiful beaches of Puget Sound. In this class, anglers will learn the techniques and strategies used to successfully fly fish for sea-run cutthroat trout and salmon from the beach. Topics covered will include how to choose a fishing location, reading beaches to find fish, fish behavior and movement, understanding tides, useful fly casting techniques, and equipment considerations for this type of fly fishing. After two evening sessions in a classroom environment, the final class will take place on the beach for on-the-water instruction and a morning of fishing.

Limited to six anglers per instructor. Participants will need a valid WA saltwater fishing license, waders and wading boots, 5-7 weight fly rod with reel and floating or intermediate-sinking line, leaders, sunglasses and flies.

Fly Fishing Stillwaters

Fly Fishing Stillwaters

Washington has some of the best stillwater fly fishing in the country. Lakes, however, can be challenging to learn. In this course, anglers will gain valuable insight on finding fish in stillwaters, insects and other available food items, presentation techniques, equipment considerations, fly patterns and where to go in our local area. Then, we'll put it all together in a half-day of fishing on one of our local lakes.

Limited to six anglers per instructor. Participants will need fishing license and also a pontoon boat, float tube or row boat for the on-the-water portion of the class. If using a pontoon boat or float tube, waders and fins will also be necessary.

Fundamentals of Spey Casting

Fundamentals of Spey Casting

Spey rods have taken the Northwest by storm. This course will allow the steelhead angler to unlock the advantages of the Spey rod and gain efficiency and effectiveness in their steelheading pursuits. Learn the switch cast, single Spey, double Spey and snap-T in this fundamentals-based, on-the-water course. Perfect for anglers that are new to Spey fishing or those that know the basics and are looking to improve.

Limited to five anglers per instructor. Rods provided upon request.

Casting Instruction: Saturday, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Private Casting Lessons

Shorten the learning curve for new fly casters or fix that bad habit that has been tough to break. One-on-one casting instruction can make a dramatic difference in one's casting ability in just an hour or two. Learn how to tighten your casting loops for greater distance and control, eliminate wind knots, leverage the double haul, learn various presentation casts. The casting instruction is done at the pond behind our store.

Private instruction for single or double-handed Spey casting will include various river-right and river-left casts depending on your skill level and line style choice. The Switch Cast, Double Spey, and Circle Spey are usually covered but your time spent with the instructor can be customized to your needs. Spey casting instruction is done on the Skykomish River and requires a two hour minimum.

$65 per hour for one or two participants. For additional participants, add $25 per hour per participiant.
