Wenatchee River SteelheadAfter a recent, very unfruitful, and very long trip to B.C. that resulted in almost no fishing due to high water and catching the cold of all colds, I was anxious to take advantage of some of the E. Washington steelheading that we are blessed with each fall. On Saturday, Oct. 10th, I met up with Joe’s dad, Bill Ewing, on what has to be one of the most beautiful rivers in Washington — the Wenatchee. We decided to float the river in our pontoon boats and did a nice float from Cashmere to Monito...
RIO InTouch Big Nasty ReviewSince my last blog post on the RIO Coastal Quickshooter I have received many comments regarding a floating line option for Puget Sound sea run cutthroat fishing. No, there is not a floating version of the Quickshooter in the works at RIO that I know of. The floating line choice for many anglers who use neutrally buoyant or top water flies in Puget Sound has been a shooting head line such as an OutBound for its ease of casting and a forceful punch though the wind. However, as with all shooting...
Where to Go Fly Fishing in Washington in the Month of JuneJune is here and fly fishing in the Seattle, Washington area has plenty to offer this month. Here is a fishing report and some ideas on where you may want to spend some time with your fly rods in the Seattle area and general Washington area. Steelhead & Salmon The beginning of June marks the opening season for summer steelhead in western Washington. Most attention this month will be on the Skykomish River in the Seattle area. So far, steelheading has been quite good on the Skykomish fr...
May 26th YakMichael Bennett, and Mason Denger finally talked me into my first trip down the Yakima river in 5 years. It ended up being the best upper river day I have ever had. A handful of big fish to the hand, and plenty of missed opportunities to boot. The dryfly action wasn’t super, so we spent most of the day nymphing using Pats Rubber Leg Stones, Prince Nymphs, and Graphic Caddis. Michael ended up pulling up this beauty cutthroat on the Prince Nymph. But the Graphic Caddis has seemed to be the go t...
For Those That Give Me The Funny LooksUsually when we get weather like we have had. Torrential deluges’, Flooded rivers and 2ft of vis in the river for weeks. Every Saturday while in the shop talking fish, the topic always comes up about how bad of shape the rivers are in. Last week I was in total agreeance with all that came in. Yesterday after seeing the river on the way into work, and the silted steelhead green that it was flowing my mind began to wander all day about searching for the chrome that the pools and runs of the...
Missouri River, MontanaI fished the Missouri River in Montana for the first time over the last few days. What a great river with great numbers of fish and lots of really big fish. This trip was hosted by the folks at RIO and me and a two other fly shop owners had the pleasure of getting to know a few of the main guys responsible for the sales, marketing and manufacturing of RIO lines. Not only did I enjoy time on one of the world’s best trout rivers, but I also got a chance to take a very detailed look at what make...
IFTD Show in DenverNothing too exciting for me to report fishing-wise for this last week… but I did fly down to Denver for three days to go to the International Fly Tackle Dealer (IFTD) show. This show is for the manufacturers to show their products to retail buyers and the press. It is also where most manufacturers announce their new products for the year. Although the show has been down in attendance the last few years and this year was the same, but it was still the largest gathering of fly fishing tackle yo...
Welcome to our new Reports Blog!Welcome to our new fly fishing report blog. We’re hoping this will be a great new tool for us at PFF to provide you with up-to-date fishing reports. Believe me, if you worked at the shop, you would quickly understand why it happens that way. SO… enter the new “blog”. If you don’t know what a blog...
Two Days OffWell a couple of cancellations gave me a few days to fish with Mr. Zander and Mr. Ewing, on the Wenatchee. I’ve been trying like mad to get Ben on a steelhead river for a day. We’ve been Shad fishing, Cutty Fishing, but no Steelhead. So with a day off from the shop he headed over and met my dad and myself in Cashmere. It was a bright sunny, cold morning on the river, with every fly fishing guide in Eastern Washington having a boat on it. As the boats scattered down the river we finally got to...
June 20th 2010, Upper Sky RiverFishing on the upper sky has been great. We have had lots of bent rods, plenty of swings and misses. Much like the Mariners lineup we cant seem to score but we can get to the plate. Between lost cameras and plenty of lost fish this will be a summer to remember. Biggest problem of the year so far and a little tip for those coming out for the first time or just getting into it. Please if your making the transfer from trout fishing to steelheading, never assume you will be playing these fish wit...
Sammamish Lake - 7/6/2010Hit Lake Sammamish and had a great time catching around 12 to 15 quality smallmouth. The lake got pretty windy in the afternoon plus the waves from all the water skiers, but the morning bite was great. Ben joined me in the afternoon and, although it was much slower than the morning and early afternoon, we still managed to catch a few more fish. The big fish of the day was a smallmouth of around four pounds and the average fish was probably two pounds. I was primarily fishing dock pillars in a...
