Daiichi 1710 fly tying hooks are a popular nymph and small streamer hook. The 2X Long shank makes the Daiichi 1710 hooks ideal for flies like the Prince Nymph, Copper John, or Hare's Ear. We like the Daiichi 1710 for larger nymphs and also for smallish streamer patterns. For smaller streamer patterns, the 2X Long shank enables the tier to create a smaller fly but maintain a decent hook gape as compared to streamer hooks with longer shanks.
The Daiichi 1710 is also a popular hook for foam dry flies like hoppers. The 1X heavy wire isn't an issue with the foam, while the ratio of shank length to hook gape leaves plenty of space for bulky foam without compromising hook gape.
